Dr Michael Hayden is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Maynooth University School of Business. Michael completed his accountancy training with KPMG and qualified as a chartered accountant. After working in professional practice, he held the position of financial controller in industry for several years. Subsequently, he joined Maynooth University and lectures in the areas of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management. Since joining academia Michael has gained extensive teaching experience across a broad range of accounting modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in University and has delivered modules for several Professional Accounting Bodies. He has also gained extensive examinations experience by acting as external examiner for many Higher-Level Education Institutions and through examiner roles with Professional Accounting Bodies. Michael completed his PhD on financial management in Agriculture and has presented his research at both national and international conferences. He has also published his work in leading peer-reviewed academic journals. His research interests are in the broad area of management accounting and include: Financial Management & Decision-making in Agriculture, Sustainability in Food & Agriculture, The Rural Economy, Entrepreneurship in Small/Micro Businesses and Accounting Education.
Dr Jamie O’Neill is Assistant Professor in Accountancy at University College Cork. He has a PhD from the University of Bath. He also holds a Master of Business Studies (by Research) and a first class honours Bachelor of Business Studies from the University of Limerick. Jamie worked at EY for some years where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. His research interests are non-financial reporting and corporate transparency and accountability. Jamie is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has taught accounting at universities in Ireland and the UK.
Niamh Dunne is a tax lecturer with the Technological University of the Shannon and lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Niamh has a broad experience of advising SME’s and high net worth individuals over the past ten years. Niamh worked within highly regarded top 10 accounting practices in Ireland and New Zealand and for an Irish commercial semi-state body within the energy sector advising on a host of tax issues, both domestically and internationally.
A Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and committee member of the Irish Accounting and Finance Association (IAFA), Niamh regularly works with the Irish Tax Institute and CPA Ireland education team with regards to assessment.
Dr. Seán O’Reilly is an Assistant Professor in Accountancy in University College Dublin. Seán trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in PwC and moved into academia following his training contract. Seán holds an Adjunct Lecturing post in Beijing University of Technology and is part of the FAE lecturing team at Chartered Accountants Ireland. Seán completed his PhD in Entrepreneurial and Green Finance. Seán also has experience as a company founder, director, non-executive director and consultant, including international projects. Dr. Louise Gorman is an Assistant Professor in Finance at Trinity College Dublin and has lectured and researched in the areas of accounting, finance, corporate governance and sustainability reporting up to professional and executive levels. She is a non-executive director and regularly contributes to publications and events in the areas of corporate governance and sustainability at national and international level in the academic and professional communities.
Louise O’Sullivan is a Lecturer in Accounting and Taxation at Technological University Dublin. Louise is a Chartered Accountant and International Chartered Tax Consultant. She possesses several years of industry and practice experience. Louise’s research areas of interest are accounting, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and taxation. Louise holds an Adjunct Lecturing post in Beijing University of Technology and is part of the Irish Tax Institute lecturing team. Louise has published an article with RTÉ on tax.
Dr Donnchadh Ó Madagáin is Director of Finance and Company Secretary at National College of Ireland (NCI), with qualifications in accountancy, corporate governance, banking and taxation. Prior to joining NCI in 2011, he worked in senior financial management positions across a range of public and private sector companies in public broadcasting, banking, manufacturing and asset management. With a keen interest in good governance, Donnchadh was a founding non-executive director of the Corporate Governance Association of Ireland (www.CGAI.ie). He has also served as non-executive director of The Ark (www.ark.ie) and has been an active member of Scouting Ireland for most of his life. He also keeps bees!
Dr Karen-Ann Dwyer is a chartered accountant and assistant professor in accounting in Dublin City University Business School. She lectures predominantly in the areas of financial reporting, corporate governance and auditing. Karen-Ann has 11 years’ experience with KPMG (working in KPMG Dublin, KPMG Sydney and KPMG Luxembourg) and was an Associate Director in KPMG up to September 2013. Karen-Ann has also worked with Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI) in an exam capacity.
Karen-Ann graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Commerce (International): French and from University College Dublin with a Master of Accounting. She completed her PhD at the University College Dublin, under the joint supervision of Prof Niamh Brennan and Dr Collette Kirwan. Her current research interests are in auditor planning judgements and expanded audit reports.
Brendan holds a Ph.D. in Taxation from the University of Limerick (UL), Ireland. He was supervised by Professor Elaine Doyle (UL), Professor Joan Ballantine (Ulster University), and Doctor Michelle O Sullivan (UL). Brendan holds a Master’s Degree in Taxation as well as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Law and Accounting, both from the University of Limerick. He is the holder of several professional qualifications, being a Chartered Tax Advisor (received from the Irish Tax Institute, ITI), Qualified Financial Advisor, Retirement Planning Advisor and Pension Trust Practitioner (all received from the Life Insurance Association, LIA). Prior to returning to academia in 2016, Brendan worked for 10 years as a tax practitioner for Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants. His primary research focus is employee voice, in tax and the other traditional professions, and much of his research is qualitative in nature. Over the years, he has been invited to present his work at several national and international academic conferences, including the 2023 Critical Perspectives on Accounting conference, held in Bogota, Colombia. In addition to his research, Brendan has been teaching taxation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels since 2016, in subjects including corporation tax, personal tax, and capital taxes. In his lectures, he aims to bring his 10 years of practical experience into the classroom in order to create the most engaging student experience possible. He has also supervised numerous research projects at undergraduate and master’s levels. Over the years, he has contributed to his university and the wider discipline in multiple ways. Most recently, he was appointed as the UL Kemmy Business School representative to the UL Student Retention Working Group.
Natasha Caulfield is a Lecturer in Accountancy at University of Galway. Natasha is a Chartered Accountant and has several years of experience in practice and industry. Natasha’s research interests are in the field of management control systems and she is currently undertaking a PhD.
Dr. Katie Scallan is a lecturer in Accounting and Finance at South East Technological University
(SETU). Katie trained as a Chartered Accountant with PwC. Following her time in practice Katie
joined SETU and currently lectures on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the
areas of financial reporting, auditing, financial management and corporate finance. Katie also
works with Chartered Accountants Ireland in an exam capacity. Katie completed her PhD on
boards of directors in not-for-profit organisations and has presented her research at both
national and international conferences. Her research interests are in the areas of Corporate
Governance, Boards of Directors and Not-for-Profit organisations.
Established in 1986, the IAFA is an academic organisation whose aim is to promote high quality research and teaching of accounting, finance and related subjects, particularly in the Irish third level education sector. The Association has approximately 300 members. Activities of the IAFA include the Association’s Annual Research Conference, Annual Doctoral Colloquium, Annual Teaching and Learning Workshop and paper development workshops.
